About Greifswald

GETTING TO GREIFSWALD

The nearest airports are Berlin-Tegel and Berlin-Schönefeld.

From the airports, take the train to Greifswald Hauptbahnhof (NOT Greifswald Süd) from Berlin-Hauptbahnhof. There are frequent trains either via Anklam (no change) or Stralsund (1 change). Both depart from Gleis 5. The trip takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Purchase a roundtrip Ostsee Ticket (40-45 euros). It is good on any train and there is no need to make a reservation.

From Tegel, take the TXL bus (about 20 minutes). There is a window for purchasing bus tickets outside the terminal's main entrance.

From Schönefeld, you can puchase the Ostsee ticket and take the train right there. You will change at Hauptbahnhof for a train to Greifswald. Please note that there are many trains that stop at Schönefeld but do NOT go to Hauptbahnhof.

The train station is just outside the Greifswald city wall and anything within the wall  (including the Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg) is no more than a 15-minute walk.

WHERE TO EAT
Greifswald has many charming cafes. One of our favorites is Cafehaus Marimar, in a magnificent brick Gothic building on the Marktplatz. Good for cakes and light lunches. You won't find better strudel in Vienna!

On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays there is a market in the Marktplatz. Many stands sell local produce, and you can get a quick Wurst at one of the stands, or any day of the week at Senfladen Greifswald, Lange Straße 95, where you can also purchase Caspar David Friedrich mustard!

Zum alten Fritz, also on the Marktplatz is a brew pub with good regional cooking. Open late.

Brasserie Hermann, on the corner of Gützkower Straße and Goethestrße, serves good regional fare in a relaxed atmosphere. Located just outside the city wall.

Le Croy, located inside the Pommersches Landesmuseum Greifswald, is Greifwald's upscale, French-style restaurant. Elegant food focusing on regional offerings.

Restaurant Tischlerei, Salinenstraße 22, specializes in locally-caught fish. It is about a 15 minute walk west and north of the town center on the other side of the Ryck River.
